Measurement
Part of How AI marketing tools measurement and reporting work explained
Nine AI marketing tools key metrics worth tracking weekly
Nine named AI marketing metrics to review weekly, from Jasper content cost to Persado message lift, with tool facts, owners and source limits.
What to take away
- Track nine named metrics weekly, each tied to one AI tool, one source system and one owner.
- Write the calculation, not just the label, so two people reach the same number.
- Incremental ROAS and lead score precision need a holdout or a fixed outcome window.
- Set thresholds from your own baseline, not from a vendor benchmark.
The nine weekly metrics and how to compute them
Each row names the tool that supplies the number and the arithmetic behind it.
The nine weekly metrics
| Metric | AI tool | Calculation | Threshold source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Content cost per approved asset | Jasper | Tool fee plus editor hours, divided by approved assets | Last quarter's average |
| Organic clicks per optimised page | Surfer SEO | Search clicks to edited pages, divided by pages edited | Prior 28 days, same pages |
| Email revenue per 1,000 sends | Klaviyo AI | Attributed revenue divided by sends, times 1,000 | Own 12-week median |
| Ad creative win rate | AdCreative.ai | Variants beating control, divided by variants tested | Own rolling win rate |
| Chat qualified lead rate | Drift | Chats meeting your lead definition, divided by total chats | Baseline before the change |
| Personalisation conversion lift | Mutiny | Variant rate minus control rate, divided by control rate | Control cell |
| Lead score precision | HubSpot AI | Contacts above threshold reaching sales-qualified status within 90 days, divided by all above threshold | Previous scoring model |
| Incremental ROAS | Albert.ai | Incremental revenue from the budget shift, divided by incremental spend | Holdout or geo test |
| Message variant lift | Persado | Variant response minus control response, divided by control response | Control cell |

Agree the definitions in a shared document any marketer can edit. Our guide to how AI marketing tools measurement and reporting work shows how those definitions feed a report a finance team will accept.
Define each metric in writing
- State what is counted
- Name the source system
- Set the period
- Keep definitions in a shared document
Tool facts to act on
- Jasperper-seat plans with brand voice controls; unused seats still cost money.
- Surfer SEOuser-based plans with monthly article limits, so check the cap against your publishing plan.
- [Klaviyo AIa free tier](/ai-email-marketing-tools-uk-compared) covering 250 contacts, then pricing scales with list size.
- AdCreative.aia credit model, so extra variants and regenerations both consume credits.
- Driftannual enterprise contracts, so agree an exit route before you pilot.
- Mutinycustom pricing; ask what counts as a personalised session.
- HubSpot AIfree CRM with paid seats for automation and scoring.
- Albert.aienterprise media budgets; get the minimum spend in writing.
- Persadoenterprise pricing, with finance and retail brands among its users.
Any tier that does not appear on a public pricing page is provisional until it is quoted. The ISBA knowledge hub carries advertiser guidance on AI in marketing.
Example: email revenue per 1,000 sends traced to a decision
Illustrative figures only. A team sends 120,000 emails in a week and Klaviyo attributes £18,000 of revenue to the campaign. Revenue per 1,000 sends is £18,000 divided by 120,000, multiplied by 1,000, which gives £150.
Their 12-week median is £162, so the week sits about 7 per cent below baseline. The same gap has appeared three weeks running.
The owner checks two things in order: open rate by segment, then the send-time setting changed three weeks ago. Send time was the only change. The decision is to revert it and rerun the split on half the list.
Source: Klaviyo campaign report. Period: seven days. Owner: lifecycle manager. Decision: revert.
Two metrics that need a test design
Incremental ROAS: take revenue that would not have happened without the budget shift, then divide by the shifted spend. Albert.ai moves money inside a platform, so a holdout region or a clean control period is needed to separate lift from trend.
Lead score precision: count contacts HubSpot AI scored above your threshold, then count how many reached sales-qualified status within 90 days. Divide the second by the first. Precision in the top decile matters more than overall accuracy.
Our comparison of AI marketing tools attribution methods explains why a platform-reported number often differs from a tested one.
Averages, blind spots and stale baselines
A mean cost per lead across five channels hides which channel carries the loss. Report the spread beside the mean. If a number never changes a decision, cut it from the operating report.
Record the current value before a change goes live, or an improvement claim rests on memory. Match the comparison window to the buying cycle: a week for fast retail, a quarter for considered purchases.
Every source has blind spots. Cookie-based measurement misses people who decline consent, CRM records depend on sales discipline, and platform reports sometimes claim the same conversion twice. Read the ICO guidance on online tracking before adding a tag.
Write the limitation beside the metric and mark any untraceable number as indicative. Keep indicative numbers out of budget decisions.
Who runs the weekly review and what triggers an escalation
One person owns the ritual, usually a marketing operations analyst or a senior marketer in a smaller team. They publish the nine numbers at the same time each week, with one comment per metric from its owner.
Escalate when:
Weekly review escalations
- An outcome metric sits below baseline for two consecutive weeks.
- A tracking tag, consent rate or script changes without notice.
- Spend moves outside the agreed plan.
Tile the dashboard so an outlier shows before the average. Our guide to arranging an AI marketing tools reporting dashboard sets out a layout that fits one page.
Review the nine weekly, the outcome metrics monthly and the whole set quarterly. The CIM content hub publishes marketing research that will test whether the set still matches the plan.
Common questions
How many metrics belong in one weekly report?
Nine for this review. In a wider report keep three to seven live metrics and hold the rest on request, because a long list makes an owner hard to find.
Should AI-written content be measured differently?
No. Use the same outcome metrics as any other content. If a tool only changes production speed, the gain shows in cost per approved asset rather than engagement.
What if a metric has no reliable or consented source?
Label it indicative, state the limitation on the same line, and leave it out of budget decisions until a lawful source exists.
